I have never painted in gouache before but I love the matt finish and thought it was time to try it.
Arteza Gouache comes in 60 colors and I had to have the complete set cause who doesn’t want all the colors. It is also available in smaller sets as well but the 60 color set was about 34.00 on Amazon.
You can’t go wrong for that price.
This is not professional artist grade gouache but it will do for now.
This was the original cactus photo that I found on pixabay. It had a good variety of color and light and dark for me to play with.
I wanted to abstract it up a bit and have some fun. I can be very detailed in art and fiddly too much and lately, I am choosing pieces that give me an opportunity to learn to be a bit looser and even somewhat abstracted.
I began by blocking in all the base color so that when I painted I was not judging color and value on white paper. The background is dark purple violet, that seems to be photographing as black.
I began laying in patches of color and bringing each part of the cactus to life. After I got them all painted it I went back to balance out all the color through the painttng.
Gouache is a fun medium and I will definitely be using it more. I love the matt finish and pastel pencils work well over the gouache to touchups and blending backgrounds for a touch of color and that dark purple.
